The Best Anti-Aging DIY Face Masks

Share

Between our increasingly busy lives and the environmental toxins that come into contact with our skin each day, we are experiencing malnourished, aging skin more than ever before. And, shockingly, many of the common skin and beauty products that are supposed to help reverse these effects only accelerate the aging process due to their high chemical content.

Fortunately, research has shown that there are some natural ingredients we can turn to and use in a DIY face mask to help combat these effects. One great DIY ingredient is honey, which has a natural ability to attract water and moisturize the skin, leaving you with a soothing glow. That's why I use it in my DIY Face Mask for Glowing Skin as well as other face mask DIY recipes. If you want to turn away from chemical-laden products and use only the best, purest ingredients in your beauty routine, keep reading to get the recipes for my favorite DIY anti-aging face masks.

Benefits of Using a DIY Face Mask

Before we dive into the face mask DIY recipes, let’s take a moment to discuss how DIY face masks work for your skin. When you apply a face mask to your skin, you’re putting specific ingredients directly onto your face with the goal of allowing them to set in over a short period of time, maximizing their benefits. Common uses of both commercial facial masks as well as using a homemade face mask include:

  • Improving hydration
  • Minimizing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
  • Reducing oil production
  • Fighting acne or occasional breakouts

Personally, I prefer to use a homemade face mask because many commercial skin care products have actually been shown to accelerate the aging process. The chemicals used in these products leave traces of their existence in the inflammation, sagging skin, and wrinkles they leave behind. Fortunately, research has shown that all-natural ingredients make the best face mask, regardless of the benefit you’re targeting. So let’s take a look at my top DIY face mask recipes and learn why they’re so effective.

The 3 Best Face Masks for Glowing Skin

If you’re wondering how to make a simple homemade face mask but you’re not sure about which ingredients you should use for the best skin care routine, take a look at my top three face mask DIY recipes that deliver big results.

1. Moisturizing Honey Face Mask

How it works:

The latest findings in the science of autophagy—the process responsible for detoxifying every cell in your body so that you can be your healthiest at any age—reveal that certain lifestyle practices and everyday foods work to naturally enhance your autophagy. The best part? You can apply some of these foods topically to boost your skin’s autophagy, leaving you with radiant, beautiful skin.

My Moisturizing Honey Face Mask contains potent inflammation-cooling ingredients that can help to slow down the aging process while enhancing your autophagy from the outside in. Let’s take a look at the ingredients to learn why this is the best homemade face mask for glowing skin.

Key ingredients:

The Moisturizing Honey Face Mask features just three ingredients: honey, matcha powder, and either jojoba or coconut oil, making it a very easy homemade face mask to throw together rather quickly. But you may be wondering: Why did I make this homemade face mask for glowing skin with honey?

Research shows that honey is a humectant—a crucial ingredient in cosmetics that has a natural ability to attract water and moisturize the skin, leaving you with a soothing glow. Plus, using raw, local honey not only is healthy for you but also supports your local natural ecosystem.

This DIY face mask also contains matcha green tea powder, which is known to contain EGCG—a potent polyphenol that contains inflammation-cooling properties. And, finally, the oil base will help to lock in the moisture from the honey and provide that glow we all love.

How to make:

To make this recipe, simply combine a teaspoon each of raw honey and matcha powder with one-quarter teaspoon of warmed jojoba or coconut oil in a glass jar. Apply the mixture to a clean, dry face and allow to set for at least 10 minutes. Simply rinse with lukewarm water and follow up with your favorite moisturizer.

2. Bella Bergamot Face Mask

How it works:

The Bella Bergamot Face Mask is designed to soothe and nourish your skin naturally topically activating autophagy and promote beautiful, supple, and youthful-looking skin. It contains ingredients that feature healing properties known to offer protection from damage, aging, fine lines, and wrinkles! You can enjoy this antioxidant-rich facemask twice a week as part of your evening beauty and self-care ritual.

Key ingredients:

This DIY face mask contains five ingredients: tea seed oil, honey, wheat germ, citrus bergamot essential oil, and Ceylon cinnamon. For centuries, certain cultures have revered tea seed oil for how it can enhance beauty and promote cellular repair. Meanwhile, the polyphenols in the superfruit citrus bergamot also support autophagy as well as help to cool inflammation, thereby offering anti-aging effects. And, finally, both the honey and wheat germ promote moisture retention and strengthen the natural barrier of your skin.

How to make:

Mix a couple of teaspoons of tea seed oil and one teaspoon each of honey and wheat germ in a small bowl. Add in two drops of citrus bergamot essential oil and the optional cinnamon. Mix well and then apply it to your face, allowing it to set for 15 to 20 minutes. Rinse your face afterward using lukewarm water.

3. Rosemary Thyme Clarifying Face Mask

How it works:

This is the homemade face mask to use when you’re experiencing a breakout or if you’re struggling with acne. Here’s why: This DIY face mask was created especially for acne-prone skin and therefore contains bentonite clay, which helps to remove excess oils and pull out impurities. Plus, the other ingredients in this Rosemary Thyme Clarifying Face Mask have some acne-fighting properties as well.

Key ingredients:

The ingredients in this homemade face mask include beontonite clay, yogurt, honey, and a variety of essential oils, including rosemary, thyme, lavender, and tea tree. The autophagy-activating polyphenols from rosemary and thyme help to cool the inflammation that comes along with breakouts. They’re also known to be effective against the bacteria linked to acne. Meanwhile, both yogurt and raw honey help to rebalance the skin and support the skin’s microbiome! And the soothing lavender essential oil was included to help inflammation even more while the optional tea tree essential oil supports even more antimicrobial effects.

How to make:

To make this DIY face mask for acne, simply combine 1 tablespoon each of bentonite clay, yogurt, and honey along with four drops of lavender essential oil, two drops each of rosemary and thyme essential oils, and one drop of tea tree essential oil in a small bowl. Once it’s well mixed, apply the mask to your face and let it set for 10 to 20 minutes. Then, rinse your face with lukewarm water. Make sure to store any leftover product in your refrigerator for up to four days to prevent any mold growth.
