I will admit that it’s been a long time since I’ve eaten fast food. It simply isn’t a part of my routine or something that my palate craves. I find it much easier and enjoyable to eat out at sit down restaurants or whip up some grass-fed burgers at home.
I realize that I’m not the norm when it comes to fast food. I grew up on a biodynamic farm in Europe, which is essentially a slow food experience. I wasn’t introduced to fast food, drive-throughs or eating on-the-go until I moved to the United States as a young teenager.
I recently read that about 25% of people in the U.S. eat fast food at least once per week, which makes sense because it is widely available, convenient, less expensive than other dining choices and quite deep-seated into the American culture. It’s not impossible to eat keto at a fast-food restaurant, but keto fast food options are going to be quite limited.
The most keto-friendly fast food choice is likely a burger without the bun. Some places will have a lettuce wrap option available and you can add a side salad. You could also go for a salad entrée with added protein. Since fast food tends to be carb heavy, it is best to avoid the fries, anything breaded, sodas and other sugary beverages. Be careful to look for hidden carbs or sugar in salads and salad dressings. And make a note that ketchup and other condiments can be full of sugar and inflammatory fats. If you have a bottle of olive oil in your purse like I usually do, this would be the perfect occasion to use it.
Because of the popularity of the keto diet, it wouldn’t surprise me if keto fast food became more available and more keto-friendly options begin to appear on menus. Still, I have reservations because of the quality of the food and am an advocate of High Fiber Keto than dirty keto.
One more tip for fast food dining on keto: use supplements! Supplements can be a secret weapon for any time you eat out or travel.
