Finish an especially tough or super sweaty workout? Don’t reach for a sports drink that’s probably loaded with lots of calories and sugar. Instead, go for a smoothie that’s loaded with good-for-you ingredients, like berries, greens, or nut butters. Instead of using whey protein powder, I add a scoop of collagen powder. Here’s one of my favorite smoothies. I like to add a scoop of collagen powder to boost three particular amino acids—glycine, proline, and hydroxyproline—that aren’t found in whey proteins (that come from dairy) or plant proteins. Collagen has been shown to help speed up recovery time; that’s probably because of the effect it has on supporting your connective tissues, muscles, and joints. In addition, collagen has also been shown to help people exercise longer.
